Katherine Freind has been involved in the Performing Arts industry her entire life creating quality work both on and off stage. Most recently in December 2021, Katherine served as Musical Director for Old Mill Theatre and their acclaimed production of ‘Little Women’ the Musical.


Freind began dance classes at the young age of 3 and has been trained in a wide range of genres including Classical Ballet, Jazz, Tap and Contemporary Dance. Vocally she has been classically trained by Shirley Flesfader and Ruth Young/Atkinson and has also been trained with the Trinity College of London in Speech & Drama studying externally with June Percival. In 1996, Katherine was accepted into the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) and gained a Diploma of Musical Theatre with the Australian Teachers of Dancing (ATOD).  Currently she owns and runs Bel Canto Performing Arts with her family, a school dedicated to teaching youth Musical Theatre and producing quality youth productions.


Katherine’s on-stage theatrical journey began at the age of 7 and over the years she has performed in a wide range of professional and community theatre productions. Highlights include ‘Evita’ at His Majesty’s Theatre in 1994, ‘Oliver’ at the Regal Theatre in 1998, ‘The King & I’ at the Regal Theatre in 2004, ‘The Mikado’ at the Regal Theatre in 2006 and ‘Cruisin’ the Musical with Glenn Shorrock and JCM Productions at the Regal Theatre in 2007. In 2011 Katherine had the privilege of being a part of the G&S production of ‘Gondoliers’, followed by ‘Mikado’ and ‘The Magic of G&S’ in 2012.


Katherine made her directorial debut for the Stage Key Company with ‘The Great Christmas Tree Robbery’ and since then, has directed a number of quality community theatre productions. Credits include: ‘The Wizard of Oz’ Young Performers Edition, ‘Aladdin Jr’, and ‘Peter Pan’ (The Stage Key Company), ‘Annie’ the Musical, and ‘Beauty & the Beast’ (Koorliny Arts Centre), ‘Looking Back’, and ‘The Secret Garden’ (Melville Theatre Company), ‘Camp Rock’ the Musical, ‘Bring It On’ the Musical and ‘Band Geeks’ the Musical – Australian Premiere (Black Box Performing Arts). Musical Direction credits include ‘Snow White’ and ‘Little Women’ the Musical (Old Mill Theatre).

Bel Canto Performing Arts production credits include direction for ‘G2K The Sound of Music’, ‘G2K Oklahoma’, ‘Fiddler On The Roof Jr’, ‘Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat Jr’, and musical direction for ‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang Jr’.

In 2022, Katherine is very much looking forward to the expansion of Bel Canto Performing Arts into new venues ‘Koorliny Arts Centre’ and ‘Don Russell Performing Arts Centre’. In July of this year, Freind returns as Production Musical Director for Singin’ In The Rain Jr.
